DIY Natural Shampoo

DIY Natural Shampoo

by Jacie Bandur

Hey Friends!

I have a problem and based on conversations I've had, I think other people do, too. My problem is: I really struggle with natural shampoo. I’ve tried so many different kinds and I often feel like my hair doesn’t get clean. OR it is in a ball of knots when I get out of the shower and takes me 20 minutes just to brush. OR it gets greasy really, really fast (like by the next day, fast). And truth be told, I’m not one to wash my hair everyday. I’m not even a mom and I don’t have time for that, so I’m guessing you don’t either.

If you are also struggling, I have this really great DIY-ish shampoo recipe you need to try. It’s not just the best natural shampoo I’ve used, it’s basically the best any kind of shampoo I’ve used. Seriously, so good. My hair feels like baby angel wings after I wash it. Bless.

So, first off, if you aren’t already diluting your Thieves Dish Soap, you need to be doing that. I will give you that recipe, too, just in case you need it.

Thieves Dish Soap dilution recipe:

⅓ Thieves Dish Soap (4 oz)

1 TBSP Baking Soda (helps it to suds)

OPTIONAL: Add a capful of Thieves Household Cleaner for fun/extra cleaning power!

Fill the rest of the Container with warm water (about 8 oz)

SHAKE & DONE

And you are probably wondering why this is relevant? Well. You are going to need ⅓ of the Thieves Dish Soap you saved from the Dish Soap dilution recipe. So here we go.

The Best Shampoo recipe:

⅓ Thieves Dish Soap (4 oz)

1 TBSP Baking Soda

1-2 capfuls of Thieves Household Cleaner concentrate

20-ish drops of your fav oil combo -- I most recently did 10 lavender + 10 peppermint. But do whatever will serve your hair + scalp the best! Maybe you should use Cedarwood or Geranium or Hinoki? You know you the best.

8-ish ounces of warm water

ProTip: I would recommend filling the bottle ⅔ full, shaking to combine and then filling the rest of the way with more warm water. It can be hard to get everything combined evenly if you fill all the way to the top before trying to mix. I learned from experience.

SHAKE & DONE

Note: It does have a similar color to urine. Oh well, it works!

If you aren’t sure if you will like it, so you want to do just a little bit. You can mix some of your already diluted Thieves Dish Soap in a small glass jar with a little splash of Thieves Household Cleaner and a few drops of your fave Young Living Essential Oils. If you don’t have oils in your life yet - never fear, you can sign up here

How to use The Best Shampoo:

Step 1: Apply to your hair and Lather, Rinse, Repeat (seriously, wash your hair twice with this magic sauce - mine doesn’t suds until the 2nd wash)

Step 2: Apply any Young Living Conditioner to your hair (I’m currently using the Copaiba Vanilla one because that’s what I already had) & rinse

You will already be able to tell how soft your hair is about to be when you are rinsing the conditioner.

Questions I had that you might have:

What kind of bottle should I use?

  • Truthfully, I’m an Amazon Prime girl, so I contemplated ordering a “shampoo” bottle from Amazon. But because I am also extremely impatient and didn’t want to wait 2 days for one to be delivered, I just used an extra dish soap bottle I had on hand. After using it a few times I really like it in the dish soap bottle because I literally just squirt a blob (a technical shampoo measurement) on the top of my head to lather.

How much will it cost per bottle of shampoo?

  • I’m not a huge measure-er or math person, but probably somewhere around $5-6/bottle depending how much Thieves Household Cleaner + what oils you use. VERY comparable to what you would buy at the store sans the toxins. (all the praise hands)

I would love to know how this works on different hair types. So please try this out, and let me know how it works for you!
